A few years ago while I was in seminary, I had the opportunity to go to @urbana missions conference. It was a unique experience for several reasons, but one thing for sure. It was the first time I experienced a large array of books from all of the different publishers supporting the event! I bought many books that fine day. One of them happened to be Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes (MSWE). (Don’t mind the kind of creepy cover.)
I really appreciated taking a look at how the differences in cultures can significantly affect the way a person interprets any type of writing, especially Scripture. MSWE has three sections of three cultural barriers that get deeper and deeper. There are key cultural differences that are hard to identify! I will mention a couple that I know I am guilty of ignoring or being ignorant of.
For one, there are many different races and ethnicities throughout the Bible, and oftentimes when the race or ethnicity is mentioned, it is for a good reason. It will most likely have a helpful meaning or indication about the story you are reading. However, while I intellectually know this, I am usually picturing a bunch of white guys in my head. Of course, this is problematic, because none of them were white and it keeps me from having the correct picture. So, instead of ignoring those crazy names next time, spend some time figuring out what that all means. Hint: it’s in the text.
Second, there is a lot of discussion regarding cultural values. Not only is the Middle East a honor and shame culture, the people there have a different understanding of time and many cultural norms. While I do find this to be a fool’s errand at times, having a general understanding of honor/shame culture and the way different cultures interact differently is a great help.
MSWE gets a 3/5 for me. While the book was far from riveting at times, there were several instances where I was pleasantly surprised. I am better equipped for understanding Scripture now because of it. Check it out!
