After reading The Gospel Comes with a House Key, I wanted to read another book from Rosaria Butterfield. She writes so well, and I know I can learn a lot from her. So, I picked up her first book The Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert (STUC).
STUC is Rosaria’s conversion story. It’s her journey of faith up until she gets married to her husband. The reason she calls herself an unlikely convert is because her story begins with her being a tenured professor at Syracuse University where she was the department chair of Gay and Lesbian studies. Her research took her to a Christian home where she eventually came to believe. However, it wasn’t that simple.
Throughout the story, Rosaria is honest with questions and doubts along the way. It’s important to remember that often when you call someone to believe in Jesus, that decision comes with consequences. There can be broken relationships, friendships, and additional hardships. I am definitely grateful for her point of view.
Rosaria didn’t get married till after her child-bearing years, but that didn’t stop them from growing their family. What’s so great about Rosaria’s story is that she is honest about the hardships. They have wins. They have loses. Regardless, they continue to love the least of these, because Jesus has called them to.
I am giving this book a 5/5. Reading the two books from Rosaria Butterfield has changed the way I view hospitality and even growing my family.
