First (paper) read of 2019! Reading Between the Lines by Gene Edward Veith Jr. wasn’t a book I was really aware of till recently, and I am happy that I picked it up—well, got it for Christmas!
Reading Between the Lines is a book to aid Christians in their ability to read critically. I am always attempting to improve in that area, so naturally I enjoyed my time.
The best part of the book was probably Veith going through the different genres of books and highlighting different Christian authors in the genre. However, Veith definitely does not advocate reading only Christian authors. He quotes John Milton and tells the reader to “read promiscuously.”
Veith also goes through the different literature traditions such as Modernism, the Middle Ages, or the Enlightenment. I will have to go back and review some of that when the time comes.
Ultimately, I really enjoyed the read. Reading Between the Lines gets a 3.2/5. It really was a solid read that gave me a lot to think about.
